I'm trying to be better at keeping up with the blog. Really. But life is not cooperating. Fortunately (unfortunately), my life has been way too full lately. Lots of really great stuff going on. I am one fortunate chick. Seriously. It is actually almost ridiculous.
But onto the facts: I received my "Number Pick-Up Card" for the Boston Marathon today. Woot!! Seriously. I am really, really excited about it. Not sure what the day will have in store for me yet and haven't even set a goal. But I am super excited. Despite my whining a few months ago, I can't wait to go with my family, meet up with lots of other family, and hopefully connect with lots of running buddies, even virtual ones. I may even meet Maria! Sweet!!!
My week has been going well, although by Thursday afternoon I started getting the creeping crud going around. I am not as sick as some that have had it (including my kids and colleagues who have been SLAMMED), but have had congestion, sore throat, exhaustion, headache and general achyness. Ack. Was planning to run Friday after work, but just felt icky and skipped it. Today I ran 11, but am now SORE. Key I think is hydration and rest at this point. I feel like I have plenty of time though fortunately.
On tap is 13 with 40-60 minutes MP (ideal would be just over 60 and hit at least 8 miles).
Hopefully It'll go well.
So far, I have had a great weekend with my boys!
Girls on the Run has been amazing. I can't even express it to you yet. It is one of those things I honestly feel will be life-changing for me. It doesn't get better than that. We are early on, but I feel like I am already bonding (and seeing them connect with each other) and I have received the most amazing feedback from parents. And I am coaching it with great people/friends. What more can I ask for?
I don't often offer political opinions (because, hey, I am no dummy, that's dangerous), but I can't tell you how disappointed I am in the health care reform. Do we need reform? Absolutely. But this is haphazardous, unconstitutional, and likely to seriously strap (if not downright tank) many of our states who are so financially strapped they can barely pay their tax returns (hello California, New York, Florida). Seriously - has anyone involved in this looked at the big picture? Yep, health care is vital. So the feds execute a law that straps the states to bear the burden (a large part anyway that they had not anticipated). Intentions = awesome. Execution = WTFWYT?!?!?!?! I tip my hat to the FL AG: http://ow.ly/1rHfN
Not only can our states not afford this, but the IRS cannot afford their new role. Plus, since when is it okay to require citizens to purchase health care insurance or be fined? And this is under the "commerce clause?" Come on people! If this falls under the commerce clause, every act of the federal government does.
How can this pragmatically help someone who needs it?
OK. Done with rant. But still steaming some.....
:) Have a great weekend.

I am so excited about you GOTR! I wish I had room on my plate to set one up here. Maybe in a couple of years.
As for the health care thing ... The "mandate" isn't really a mandate. There are no criminal sanctions for failure to get health insurance. It's an excise tax--meaning if you don't have health insurance you pay more taxes. Same as if you don't have kids or buy a house you pay more taxes. Kind of like a reverse tax credit. So the "mandate" is also covered by Congress's taxing power. The taxing power is used to direct behavior all the time, for better or for worse and statutes doing so have been consistently blessed by the Sup Ct as a valid exercise of the taxing power. Whether the legislative policy is wise remains to be seen, but I don't think it's unconstitutional. I'm thinking about writing a paper on it. Very interesting question if nothing else!
Salty - I was hoping you'd chime in. I'd love to read your paper when you are finished.
There is a lot of interesting commentary out there on the subject. I look forward to seeing how this all unfolds in the courts.
Very much looking forward to meeting you too! Any chance your husband and/or the boys are running the 5K on Sunday? Missy and I will definitely be watching that one and around to meet up!
Hey, that could be AWESOME! What time is the 5K? I'll have to check into this....
Aw nutz, looks like registration for the 5K is now closed :(
