I just had a thought. And it is a crazy thought. But it may also be an opportunity.
I need to switch things up for a little while - even if only for a relatively short time. SO, I may try to learn how to swim. Face that fear. Crazy, huh? Especially considering I just posted on Facebook that I will never try to swim or to face that fear. But why not? Maybe now is a good time for that.
For background, I am terrified of swimming. Seriously. I can hold my own to prevent drowning (at least for a very short period of time), but I have a real phobia of not being able to freely breathe. I wouldn't call it full on claustrophobia - but the breathing thing - it is a real fear. It terrifies me. When I read race reports about tris and people talk about getting pulled, grabbed and run over during the swim it horrifies me. Gah. I would drown for sure. (For the record - that fotosearch image even makes me nervous looking at it - she CAN'T breath right there!)
My kids did a tri in August and both of them were weak swimmers too. Particularly James. He did really well for 3/4 of the first lap and then he got scared. And he fell apart. John and I really want both boys to become strong swimmers while they are young so they are not like me with swimming. Not scared.
I wonder if I can find someone who will instruct all 3 of us? That way, we could do it together. Or at least at the same time.
I'm not sure I can make this work. Or whether I will ultimately think it is a good idea after I think it through. It is just a thought. But kind of a "spark" thought. Hmmmmm.

Swimming is something I learned at a very early age and honestly I do not know if I could have done without it. Swimming was a big part of my growing up too, with summers spent at community pools with my siblings and friends. To not fear the water is a HUGE thing - I think this is a great opportunity to conquer that fear. DO IT!!!
I know around here there are sporting good stores that deal with TRI peeps that will often host a 6 week course for all ranges of swimmers including beginners. Or look into your local Y.
GOOD LUCK!!!
