I love the solitude of my early morning runs, but admittedly, sometimes the darkness and quietness can be scary - especially if I am on more desolate roads. This morning, however, took the cake. It was probably all in my head, but one truck had me quite freaked out. Here is what happened:
First of all, for background, I live in a very small town. We also live on a very quiet end of a street just before a cul de sac. There is very little traffic other than those who live here, and exceptionally little traffic at 5:45 am. Just as I was coming out of the house for my run, a large pick-up truck had just driven past the house very slowly. The driver must have just turned around at the cul de sac at the end of my street and was going toward the way I run every morning. Shortly after I came out (seconds), the truck stopped briefly, then turned down another little cul de sac and stopped again for a moment. I was only about a block away from my house when it drove past me very slowly and very closely, even though I was on the far left side of the road and the road is very wide. It got to the block ahead of me and stopped for a minute, then turned down the road I normally take. As I got to that block, I looked down and the truck was going very slowly and sometimes braking. As I got about a block further, the truck was stopped in front of the park I normally run past. It was freaking me out a little bit because it just seemed "off" so I ran up a different street. As I got to the next intersection (about the distance of 3 blocks away), I looked down the street that runs perpendicular to the street I normally run on and I saw the truck again stopped and waiting. It had turned around and was facing the direction in which I normally run. It just seemed really shady and I felt really freaked out. While I knew it seemed silly that the truck would be waiting for me, whatever it was doing was just not right. I was scared and wanted to run home, but also wanted to run far away from this truck. I rounded the block and had to run past the street the truck was waiting on (the altenate was running on a very rural, desolate road). At this point, it started slowly driving toward the direction I normally run. Again, abnormally slow (like 3-4 mph). Needless to say, I was scared. And I started thinking about all the times I have read that you should never run at exactly the same time every day and on the same routes. Yeah, well I kind of do. From that point on, I hit the "main" roads and stuck to them. By the time I was coming home, it was light out so I was okay running my normal route back.
As I got home, I told my husband and he was very upset about it and wanted me to call the cops. We certainly live in a small enough town that they would drive around tomorrow morning to check it out, but I just feel like that is over the top. It seems incredulous that this truck was looking for me, but it was very shady behavior and I can't figure out an explanation. It wasn't the paper guy - he drives insanely fast and throws the papers out his window. And it didn't seem like someone that was lost/looking for a house given it was driving so slowly up and down cul de sacs, turning around and intermittently stopping over .7 miles and several different side roads. And at 5:45 in the morning.
What do you think? Was I being paranoid or would it have freaked you out too?

Without question, you should call the police and report it. Now! They will step up their patrolling of the area in the mornings and be on the look out.
Do you run with your phone? You should.
You are absolutely right. I just called them and they are going to step up the patrol in that area in the early mornings for a while.
Whatever the reason for the truck's behavior, it can't hurt to report it. I have a longer 3 avenue run to get me to my main path w/heavy traffic right next to the path, I always freak myself out running those blocks early in the a.m. too. Stay safe!
I agree! Call the cops and file a report. You shouldn't ever be scared to run in your own neighborhood no matter what time it is. If you see it again get the license plate and call ASAP! There are some weird people out there!
Call the cops. At least you live in a small enough area so that they'll take you seriously and do something. Try that in Minneapolis.
Also, carrying your phone is a good idea... how about some nice pepper spray, too? I have to remember to start carrying mine again now that I don't run with a dog anymore.
Mindi, your story is totally freaky! I'm glad that you called the police. I would have been scared, too.
Super scary, Mindi! I get worried a lot when I'm out there running. I try to remind myself that I'll probably get messed up by a bad driver before some creep, but that doesn't help. I'm glad you called the police! I agree with Sage, mace is good to carry (I do when I run super early) and that a dog is the best defense. People tend to be pretty afraid of dogs...you should get a big ole German Shepherd, I bet no one would even consider messing with you.
Thanks everyone. I am glad to hear I am not just being crazy. The police were more than happy to patrol the area for a while, which definitely gives us peace of mind.
I typically do not run with my phone (or pepper spray), but that may have to change. Boy did I wish I had my phone yesterday.
