Lackluster

Is an understatement for my first week of training. "Ack" is more precise. My HR is through the roof and my first "long" run was way harder than it should have been. And did I mention I am REALLY slow. I have also been very achy - not sore muscles, more like achy everywhere. I really hope I am not getting sick. But enough on all of that. Here is the week in all of its ugly glory:

M: rest/pilates

T: 8 easy (9:20 / 160)

W: 6 easy (9:32 / 154)

R: 7 easy (9:23 / 158)

F: rest/pilates

Sa: 12 easy (9:25 / 163)

Su: 7.5 easy (9:36 / 164)

Total: 40.8

Seriously. My HR was that high and I was that slow. I sure hope this improves quickly....

Oh yeah: One minor worry. My L heel hurts. Really weird given low mileage and that it has never been a problem before . . . .

a word about that heel: calves! Make sure your calf is loose and knot-free, and your heel problem should take care of it itself. Do it now! Have you ever heard someone mangle the phrase "nip in the bud?" Well, nip that heel in the butt right now! :-)

HR high, paces slow, but the mileage you did is solid for the first week of training and considering your relatively low mileage since Chicago. You have a long time til Boston. I'm sure your HR/pace will improve very quickly after a week or two of consistent mileage.

Is your family traveling to Boston with you?

Mindi, I get the same thing those first few weeks back...I hate seeing how ugly my HR is for the pace and I swear the less I run, the more stuff hurts!!

It may not be the best advice, but I tend to just try to push through those ugly weeks, as crappy as they seem. Usually, out of nowhere, I'll just have a random great run and wham, it all starts going the way it supposed to. Sometimes it takes me a couple of weeks other times over a month but it always works out in the end.

Joe positive took my comment. Calves!

On the other side of the heel, you might think about more flexible shoes also. That's what I think cured my PF. If your shoes are stiff it creates a long lever arm to pull on your fascia.

(PS: You know I'd kill for your mileage!)

Thanks all. My calves feel totally normally, but I will give it a shot. @RFTL - yep, fam damily is going. :) Need to start making plans ASAP. Jen, glad to hear I 'm not the only one in this boat!! Lloyd also told me it should only be a couple weeks. @Greg - not sure about the shoes. I am trying a new kind, but still mostly using my old brand.... Hope you can start putting in the miles soon!
