Today was my first VO2Max workout of the season. The best part was that I got to do it outside! Yay! The streets have finally cleared for the most part and this is the first week in weeks that I have been able to run outside in the dark mornings. There were a few icy spots, but for the most part, all was clear. Hopefully this will continue for a while.
I was scheduled for 8 miles with 5x600 meters @ 5K pace with 90 second recoveries. I hit the road and was logging a very slow warm-up. The bad news was that I wasn't feeling so hot. I have something of a head cold and tummy issue going on that simply isn't fun. I almost started talking myself out of the workout, but thankfully nipped the self-doubt pretty quickly. I started my first interval and realized I had no idea what pace I was running at. It was dark and I did not have the Garmin set to show the lap pace. Oh well. I just pushed as hard as I comfortably could. All-in-all, the intervals went well and I actually felt much better during that part of the run than my warm-up. Go figure. Did a short cool down and got home. When I lookd at the numbers, I was actually pleasantly surprised:
Warmup: 3.8 miles (9:34 / 147)
Int. 1: 2:35 (6:59 / 174)
Int. 2: 2:33 (6:55 / 183)
Int. 3: 2:30 (6:48 / 185) - downhill
Int. 4: 2:30 (6:47 / 186)
Int. 5: 2:33 (6:56 / 186) - uphill
Cooldown: 1.57 miles (8:51 / 166)
Not earth shattering, but solid. Happy Wednesday.

Hope your head/tummy issues resolve quickly! Way to get through a tough workout. Bet that feels great to have it out of the way and to have done it so solidly!
Hope I didn't transmit my tummy virus through the blogosphere.
186 bpm? Wow, you were really able to push yourself. Good job!
186 is nothing. Usually my AHR in a 5K is around 188 (unless I am slacking off). :)
My average is usually 188 also in a 5k, but I can never seem to push myself that hard in a workout. I'm a wimp I guess.
